The Oyster Girls is a ladies’ Morris dance side from the Isle of Wight. The side has been dancing since 1981, although with much change of personnel over the years. The very first dance that the group learned was ‘Mobberly’ danced to the tune of ‘The Oyster Girl’ hence the name of the side.
We mainly dance in the north-west tradition of Morris dancing, and wear clogs. Many of our dances originate from the north-west of England. We wear bright green dresses with a frill of gold and red, and our green clogs with bells.
On Wednesday evenings in the summer we dance at pubs and seafronts around the island. These dance out generally start at 8:00Pm. We pass round a collecting jug for local charities; last year we collected for Alzheimer's Cafe, and in 2024 we will be collecting for Isle of Wight Search and Rescue. In the winter we practice on Wednesday evenings at St John's church hall in Newport.
We also dance at fetes, festivals and other special occasions when invited. We dance mainly on the Island but have been known to dance on the mainland We have also danced in France, Germany, Kefalonia, Guernsey and Marrakech!
